4 WAYS WE CAN RESPOND TO DISASTER
Michigan Bishop David Bard invites you to help all those who have been impacted by hurricanes and tropical storms this year in the United States and in other places in the world. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma are only the first of what is expected to be a busy storm season. There are 4 constructive ways we can help alleviate suffering and help get people back on their feet.
1. PRAY every day for those impacted by these natural disasters, particularly for the victims, survivors, first responders and those involved in rescue and recovery. Please organize prayer groups, vigils and chains.
2. GIVE cash donations to the United Methodist Committee on Relief Domestic Disaster Response Fund at UMCOR. org or take an offering designated for Advance #901670. 100% of your gift is used to care for storm victims. This is possible because of our offering on UMCOR Sunday each spring that raises funds for administration and overhead.
3. DONATE only those things asked for by relief agencies. Lists of needed items can be found at UMCOR.org. The materials for flood buckets and hygiene kits are needed, but must be shipped in a very specific way to our distribution centers. Drop off sites are being set up now. Visit news.michiganumc.org for lists and instructions.
4. VOLUNTEER when the time is right and the zones are safe. A request for volunteers will go out. You must register with the Annual Conference you wish to work in. Do not call Annual Conferences for information or registration, as they are overwhelmed. Instead, please visit Annual Conference websites to register.
A final note: Compassionate people always want to be in action and are truly a Blessing. However, good intentions can go badly when help is offered in ways that interfere with well organized disaster response systems. Often valuable resources must be diverted to deal with unwanted donations and caring for volunteers. Please do not send clothing, food, water or other household goods and do not travel to these affected regions unless invited. While sending cash may feel impersonal, it is the most compassionate and effective way for offering help.
